Yet as I continued to research, the waters muddied. The more I read, the less clear the origins of the symbols became. The star, for instance, first appeared in a mid-sixteenth-century book, but some notes said it might pre-date that by centuries. Others described all three images as ancient. What seemed consistent was that most of the sources tied all the figures to paganism, to the Druids, to the Celts, and viewed them as representations of long-ago religions and beliefs.

What does this mean? I wondered. But there was a more important question: How do these symbols help me find the woman’s killer?

I had no answers.

My mind looped back to the body in the chemical bath in the morgue. The best clue remained the identity of the woman. In the real world, the one I worked in, those who murdered were usually close to their victims, not strangers but someone a victim trusted. I needed her name. I needed a place to start. Once I had the woman’s identity, I could investigate her life and those connected to her.

Toward that end, I called the morgue again, hoping that I could head over there to finally see the victim’s face. But Doc Joe had given his secretary another message for me. “You can come around five or six this evening. Or wait until tomorrow morning. Not now.”

“I’ll be there at five,” I told the woman. “Please, tell Doc Joe to expect me.”

I looked at my watch. I’d be late for my meeting with the assistant chief, but I decided to squeeze in one more stop.
